Learn More about EMDR
What is EMDR?
EMDR is a type of psychotherapy that uses eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) to help people heal from trauma.
What are the benefits of EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is a highly effective treatment for PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), with a proven success rate in helping people recover from trauma.
EMDR therapy has been shown to be an effective treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The therapy has been found to help with psychological and physical symptoms, as well as mental health. Patients who have received EMDR therapy have reported decreased anxiety, better sleep, and a reduced need for medication.
How does neuro auricular modulation work?
Neuro auricular modulation is a form of mental health treatment that uses sound to target trauma memories and associated stress responses. The therapy is based on the theory that targeted memory exposure and emotional release can help trauma victims cope with their memories and symptoms.
The therapy was first developed in the 1990s as a way to treat chronic PTSD in military veterans. Since then, it has been used to treat other forms of mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, and traumatic stress syndrome. Neuro auricular modulation is typically delivered in sessions over a period of several weeks or months.
During the therapy, patients listen to specific sounds that are known to trigger their memories of trauma. The sounds are played repeatedly until the patient experiences an emotional response – often a flashback or an intense feeling of fear or sadness. Afterward, the therapist helps the patient develop strategies for managing those responses effectively.
Neuro auricular modulation therapy offers the therapist a “window into the brain” and creates a dynamic and up to date neurological map of several areas of the brain, including the sensory body experiences, somatic unconscious, somatic memory networks, and associated emotions.
Who is a good candidate for EMDR therapy?
EMDR therapy (eye movement desensitization procedure) is an evidence-based practice that can help people suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and other mental health concerns.
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best candidate for EMDR therapy will vary depending on the individual’s symptoms and history. However, some factors that may be important considerations include:
-Nature of the trauma or traumatic memories: If the traumatic experience was physical or emotional in nature, then EMDR may be more effective than if the trauma involved sexual abuse or violence.
-Current stress levels: If a person is already stressed out due to other issues, EMDR may not be a good fit because it can further amplify their distress.
-History of prior treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or acute stress disorder: If a person has had previous treatment for PTSD or acute stress disorder, they are likely to respond better to EMDR than someone who has not had such treatments.
What should I expect during my first session?
During your first session, Shannon will assess your needs and develop a treatment plan tailored specifically for you. An EMDR treatment session is usually 50 minutes.
Treatment planning for EMDR therapy sessions can be quite complex, especially when dealing with the various physical symptoms stemming from a traumatic event. To ensure that each and every patient receives the best possible treatment, an eight phase treatment approach has been developed. This approach outlines the steps involved in treating any physical symptom, from identifying the cause of the problem to providing relief.
Will I have to talk about my traumatic memories during EMDR therapy?
No, you will not have to discuss your trauma in detail during EMDR therapy. You can however discuss in as much or as little detail about the traumatic memories and EMDR still works either way.
Traumas can cause a great deal of distress, and often lead to a range of anxiety disorders. EMDR has been found to be particularly effective in treating memories related to childhood abuse. By working with patients on an individualized basis, EMDR can help them examine and process the traumas in a safe and supportive environment. Additionally, EMDR has been shown to be helpful in treating other types of traumas, such as military combat exposures.
How often will I need to come for sessions?
The frequency of sessions will depend on your individual needs and goals. A person who has been through many traumatic events will likely need more sessions than someone who has had a single traumatic event.
According to the World Health Organization, “EMDR has been found to be an effective treatment for Trauma and PTSD”. The American Psychiatric Association agrees and has stated that “evidence supports the use of EMD [emdr] as an adjunct to traditional psychotherapy in the treatment of PTSD”. This means that, depending on your individual case, you may only need one or two emdr sessions in order to treat your trauma. However, it is always best to speak with your therapist about what is best for you.
